How marketplace payouts actually work (and why yours are slow)
July 6, 2026 · Zach, founder of Peddly
The moment a buyer pays, your money starts a journey most sellers never see. Once you understand it, every frustrating payout delay you've ever had makes sense. It doesn't make them okay, but it makes them make sense.
The hidden middle
When a buyer checks out, the card payment lands with a payment processor. Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, every marketplace uses one. The marketplace then holds that money in a kind of escrow limbo for one core reason: the platform is on the hook if the item never shows up. Buyer protection gets funded by not giving you the money until the platform is reasonably sure it won't need it back.
That part is legitimate. The frustration comes from how conservatively platforms implement it. New sellers commonly face holds measured in weeks. Some platforms wait for the buyer to leave a rating before starting your payout clock, and plenty of buyers never rate anything in their lives. Others stack a "processing" window on top of the protection window on top of the bank transfer time, and suddenly your money from a Tuesday sale shows up the following month.
What the timeline should look like
There are really only three honest checkpoints between a sale and your bank account:
- Delivery confirmation. Carrier tracking says delivered, or the buyer confirms in the app.
- A short dispute window. Enough time for a buyer to open the box and object.
- The bank transfer itself. Typically 1 to 2 business days, and that part is set by the banking system, not the platform.
Everything beyond those three is the platform choosing to sit on your money longer than it needs to.
How we do it at Peddly
I built Peddly's payout system around a simple rule: the fastest release that still genuinely protects buyers. Your payout releases instantly when the buyer confirms delivery, same day as delivery in the best case, or automatically three days after carrier tracking shows delivered if the buyer never taps confirm. Buyers keep a 14-day protection window, funded by recovery mechanics on our side rather than by holding your money hostage, and an open dispute pauses release until it's resolved. That last one is the single hold I'd defend to anyone, because it's the fair one.
If your current platform makes you wait weeks, it's worth asking what all that float is doing and whose interest it serves. Here's how the platforms compare, payouts included.
